Getting Married in Canterbury?

Canterbury is just the perfect city to get married in. It is a city with so much history, beautiful cobbled streets and buildlings, a vibrant atmosphere, and its surrounded by stunning countryside. I have worked in Canterbury for many years now and it is still one of my favourite cities to photograph weddings. There are so many wedding venues to choose from and some of my favorites include: Winters Barns, Swarling Manor, Wilderness Weddings, Howletts Wild Animal Park, The Night Yard and at the incredible Canterbury Cathedral. You can have a small wedding or elopement at Wellington House which is Canterbury's Registry Office.

NATURAL, FUN & RELAXED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Why you should get married in Canterbury?

As a wedding photographer who has lived in Kent all his life, I consider Canterbury one of my favorite cities in the county to photograph weddings. Canterbury is steeped in history and is surrounded by stunning countryside and ancient woodland, making it a diverse and picturesque city to get married in.

Canterbury is a cathedral city in southeast England and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is renowned for its history and culture. The city center of Canterbury is surrounded by a medieval wall built by the Romans in the 14th century. There are many iconic landmarks that attract over 8.1 million visitors to the city each year. There are numerous tourist attractions, including the stunning Westgate Gardens, St. Augustine's Abbey, The Marlowe Theatre, Howletts Wild Animal Park, Westgate Towers, and The Canterbury Trail. You can also take a punting tour down the River Stour. The main attraction that draws so many people to the city is, of course, Canterbury Cathedral—the seat of the spiritual leader of the Church of England and the symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It was once home to one of the most famous Archbishops, Thomas Becket, who was murdered by followers of King Henry VII for challenging the rights and privileges of the church. You can get married in the Nave or in the Crypts beneath the Cathedral. The grounds surrounding the Cathedral are beautiful, and the cloisters make a great area for a couple's photoshoot.

I spent much of my childhood visiting Canterbury. My mum would take my brothers and me to The Marlowe Theatre every year to watch the Christmas pantomime, "He's behind you!" Before I started my full-time job as a wedding photographer, I worked for a student accommodation company as a decorator. I worked across many areas in Canterbury, such as St. Dunstan's, Hales Place, Wincheap, and St. Martins, decorating houses for students studying at the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, and the University for the Creative Arts. Canterbury has a large university community with a significant young population. Bars, restaurants, and clubs such as The Pound at One Pound Lane, Club Chemistry, The Old Buttermarket, and The Cosy Club are all very busy throughout the weekend.

When I am not photographing weddings, I spend much of my free time capturing wildlife across Kent, but I often find myself coming back to Canterbury. Although it is a city, Canterbury has an abundance of wildlife in the center and the surrounding woodland areas. I have spent days walking through Blean Woods, trying to photograph woodland birds, and visiting the Wilder Blean Project, run by the Kent Wildlife Trust, where they have released bison into the wild for the first time in the UK. I would spend evenings walking along the River Stour in Canterbury, trying to spot beavers, and, with a big telephoto lens, I would attempt to capture peregrine falcons nesting in the Cathedral's Bell Tower.

As you can tell Canterbury has a very special place in my heart. So if you are looking to get married in this beautiful city then contact me!

Wedding Photography

My journey into the world of photography started when I was 15 years old. My mum handed me the camera during a family sailing holiday in Greece and asked me to take a few shots of the scenery . As I put my eye to the viewfinder and composed the frame, a dolphin suddenly jumped out of the water into view. I quickly pressed the shutter release button and captured a very blurry image of the dolphin. Although it wasn’t the best photograph but that moment sparked my interest for photography.

When I got home, I started snapping away, no matter the subject. I would walk down to my local beach, Botany Bay, with my wide-angle lens and tri-pod to practice landscape photography, or I would spend the day at Port Lympne Zoo, trying to photograph the animals with my telephoto lens through the mesh cages.

I later integrated photography into my A-level Art projects and taught myself the basics, even experimenting in a darkroom to develop beautiful monochrome images. I spent hours researching different camera settings and how each one impacts the aesthetics and feeling of a photograph. I experimented with ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, as well as composition techniques such as leading lines, the rule of thirds, and the use of foreground and background. I also learned how to compose, expose, and edit my images in Adobe Lightroom to create beautiful finished photographs.

Looking at the images on my website, I like to think my craft has improved significantly since I first started. I began photographing weddings in Kent four years ago, and I have loved every minute of it! I quickly learned that there is so much more to capture at a wedding than just the traditional family group shots. From the emotions of your bridemaids and Dad during the bridal reveal, to guests enjoying cocktail hour, to elegant couple portraits during golden hour and that big, bellowing laugh from Uncle Bob during the best man’s speech, the pure joy and excitement on people's faces—weddings are full of fun, natural moments, making them a playground for a wedding photographer!
